My little munchkins

If you’ve followed me for awhile, then you know that ever since we’ve had at least two kids, we’ve had coordinated Halloween costumes.  The first year was Pebbles and Bamm Bamm.  The next year was Little Red Riding Hood and the Big Bad Wolf.  Then came Batman, Robin, and a baby Riddler.  Then finally last year we had Jake, Izzy, and Cubby from Jake and the Neverland Pirates.  I was pregnant last Halloween, so I knew I was going to have to coordinate FOUR costumes this year.  That was going to be no small feat.  Well, since we didn’t know what we were having, my initial thought was to do The Wizard of Oz.  No matter if baby #4 was boy or girl, we could find/make costumes for everyone, Emma, of course, as Dorothy.  Fast forward to this summer, and I’ve already got the Wizard of Oz theme reeling in my head.  I’m trying to get the kids excited about it (because they are starting to get to the ages where they want to PICK their own costumes.  I mean, come on really.  Can’t you just play along with my master plan??).  We watched the movie and Emma fell in love with Dorothy (no big shock there).  Seth’s favorite was the Tin Man (DONE!) and Luke and Ellie, well, they’re just Luke and Ellie.  So Emma was already beaming about being Dorothy.  One kid down, one to go (cause Luke and Ellie are still at dressable ages).  I try to get Seth all excited to be the Tin Man, and he does get excited, for a day.  Then comes to me, “I want to be Spiderman for Halloween.” Wait, what?  That doesn’t coordinate.

“No, you mean Tin Man.”

“No, Spiderman.”

“But don’t you want to look like a cool robot?”

“No.  Spiderman.”

Where does he get this stubbornness?  Oh, right.  So, since he is now 5, I guess I should be a push-over nice mom and let him be what he wants.  After all, I grew up getting to pick all my costumes!  Then I remembered that Luke and Ellie are the same ages that Seth and Emma were when they were Pebbles and Bamm Bamm.  And I still have the costumes! Ok, so I guess it’s not so bad that everyone doesn’t coordinate.  I only have one costume to make/hunt down (Dorothy) because we already had Spiderman and the Flintstones.  Ok, Seth, you win.

Then, a miraculous thing happened.  Southern Seminary’s annual Fall Festival was the WIZARD OF OZ.  I kid you not.  Aaaand they were encouraging people to come in costume and there would be a costume contest.  Score!! Total win-win.  Seth gets to be Spiderman for Halloween, and I get my family of Oz people!! So off to Hobby Lobby I go!!

So one ridiculous Hobby Lobby bill later, I have costumes made for the kids!  After working so hard on them, and being biased in thinking they are the cutest things ever, I had to take some pictures.  So the following is what resulted from that!

Glinda and Dorothy: BFFs

Disclaimer: I did not make Dorothy’s dress.  I can’t sew, except to patch a hole or add a button.  (But I can wield a glue gun like the Sundance Kid!)  I got her dress on sale at JoAnn’s, then I made a red tutu to give it some oomph.  I know she is not completely accurate with the red accessories (except the shoes), but it’s what I had and it’s what Emma liked. 🙂

The original plan was to put Seth in a silver-painted box for Tin Man, but seeing as we’d be walking around outside in the heat, jumping on bouncy houses, etc, I wanted him to be comfortable and just accessorized him with duct tape and foil.

I considered chopping Luke’s shirt to match the actual Lollipop Guild, but I decided to keep it as is so it could be worn again as a regular shirt.  I added the collar, which lasted about .2 seconds at the festival.  Oh well.  My favorite part of his costume? His hair.  🙂

Ellie was long overdue for a nap when I got her dressed in her Glinda costume, so she didn’t make it outside.  {I’m actually shocked she was happy when I was taking her picture on the bed!}  Sad to be missing one of our crew here, but we were all better off with a fussy Glinda sleeping peacefully in her bed.

They did not end up winning the contest, but none of us really cared!  We still had fun!! It was an awesome night filled with rides, bouncy houses, treats, fireworks, games, and friends!!
